Avoid at all costs. Pen fails to open easily.Oct 19, 2010
By Steely Blue The cover of the pen takes a lot of energy to open, irrespective of how one tries to open it. I tried twisting it, pulling it, and every other way one can possibly open a pen's cover, but could find no way in which the cover comes off readily. This is really bad for an emergency situation. Why couldn't they have built the cover like that of a regular pen - one quick pull and it should pop off!
Upon opening the pen's cover, the white spraying top comes off! It is very loosely fitted. In a real usage situation, it could come off and fall down somewhere, if not remain stuck in the cover. One has to retrieve it and place it correctly, and ensure that it's pointed in the desired direction. It literally takes over 20 seconds to make the item ready to use.
Having said that, the pepper spray is noxious as expected. Among other places, I sprayed it very slightly in my kitchen sink, and then had a whiff of it. I felt my eyes, nose, and skin burn; and had coughing and sneezing for a while. I also sprayed it outdoors at arm's length, and felt no effects myself, as I was an arm's length away. It lets out a very thin stream that travels at least a few feet. If you were using it in a real situation, you'd have to ensure that you move your hand around while spraying it, so as to cover the target's entire face and neck, etc.
Due to the serious usability failures mentioned above, if you must have pepper spray as a pen, I recommend looking for an alternate product. Note that this exact Streetwise brand item is being sold on multiple product pages on Amazon by multiple sellers, so use the picture to compare and avoid this item. Unfortunately I can't answer any further questions about this product, because it has been duly disposed off.

NO EXPIRATION DATE!Aug 14, 2008
By G. Wright If one knows anything about pepper spray one knows that if you DO NOT have an expiration date then you do not know if the product is in its effective time period. To be fair it is not the sellers fault that the manufacturer does not provide an expiration date on this product, however, that being said the SELLER SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED THAT THERE IS NO EXPIRATION DATE. Under the sellers comments says "Brand new in sealed package . . ." so forth and so on but what the seller should have included was "MANUFACTURER DOES NOT PROVIDE EXPIRATION DATE" that way the customer would know not to buy this product (that is if the customer wants to know for sure the product has not expired). Like an idiot I assumed that being sold through Amazon that the product would have an expiration date since any good pepper spray should include this information (if pepper spray did not have a shelf life it would not matter, but it does). I guess the lesson to be learned here is, if there is no mention of an expiration date then one can assume it does not have one and to stay away from this product. I really do not think that pepper spray should even be allowed to be sold without an expiration date, granted you do not eat it, but consumers would not buy food (which expires) without a date on it. Anything and everything that expires should have some kind of date (enough said).
