excellent quality backpackMar 26, 2008
By Sweet Pea This backpack is very sturdy and looks like it will last a long time. Be aware, however, that if you intend to use it with the "safe" insert, that the bag is quite heavy. The "safe" insert is removable, and that is how we are using it.

Lacking EssentialsFeb 16, 2012
By Radmore I purchased this bag to provide security for camera equipment for a trip to China. This is apparently the only bag which PacSafe offers of any size for this purpose. To meet this purpose PacSafe offers as an accessory the PacSafe Camera Insert. I can only image that someone with no experience in photography was involved in the design of the insert. The camera insert is basically a sack with padded dividers in the bottom third of the sack. If you are the type that would simply pile your photo gear into a bag then I guess this works.
l wish this was the only weakness of this bag! There are two essentials that are missing and should have been included in a bag of this size. They are a chest strap and side compression straps. Without these essentials the bags performance is seriously affected. Without the chest strap the pack shoulder straps tend to slip and present the potential for someone to snatch the bag from your shoulders from behind in a crowd. It also affects the comfort of carrying the bag, putting additional strain on your back which is immediately felt. (I have since jury-rigged my own chest strap, which reduced the discomfort.) Without the side compression straps the bag proves to be unnecessarily bulky and unwieldy in tight locations and crowds. For the most part PacSafe has the security issues covered but that's all. Yes the security mesh could cover more than a small panel on the back of the bag, but otherwise for this purpose it works. With a little thought and tweaking of these issues, PacSafe could produce a very desirable product, but will they. To my knowledge there are no companies that offers a backpack that covers all of these needs, ie. security, functionality, and comfort in a camera backpack. A rain fly, a padded hip belt and accommodations for a tripod would make this dreamed of camera backpack complete. At present I am making do.
