1Do you need this?Sep 21, 2010

You may think you need this but maybe not. I ordered, "Security Chain Company SC1038 Radial Chain Cable Traction Tire Chain - Set of 2" along with the Rubber Tightner but lo and behold, there is reference after reference in the installation instructions saying DO NOT use the cable chain with the rubber tightener! SO don't order it if you order the SC1038 cable chain. This probably goes for any of the other cable type chains. I think it IS a good idea for the non-cable chain tire chains. BUT. I've ordered the tire chains that use chains and they ALREADY come with the rubber tighteners. So, now you know. If in doubt, order them but be prepared to return them. Amazon is always good about returns....

1Incorrect Cross Reference and DescriptionMar 15, 2011
By TCSC
I bought this because it was listed as the replacement tightener for our Sure Grip Z (size SZ-335) Passenger Tire Chain.

It isn't. Not only does this tightener have 5 metal rather than 6 plastic clips (which I expected) but it is actually a larger diameter than the original tightener, making it useless even if I replaced the clips.

I find this very misleading given that it was recommended that I buy this together with the chain I bought, and given the official Amazon.com description:

Product Description:
Security Chain Company Quik Grip Passenger Vehicle Traction Chain Rubber Tightener is designed for virtually every type of use from passenger cars, SUVs to trucks, airport transporters, ATVs, garden tractor to snowblowers and forklift machines.

Clearly this is not a universal product. I had tried to confirm Amazon's description by checking the Security Chain web site but they had no information about replacement tighteners. They don't even have a phone number. I am waiting for a return email to let me know what I should have ordered.

Meanwhile I think Amazon should change the links and descriptions that make it seem like this product is compatible with Security Chain Sure Grip Z and Super Z passenger tire traction devices. Clearly it isn't.

5Just what is needed! Especially for the cablesFeb 06, 2010
By William Carpenter "tlcstat"
This product is just great, especially for the cables which don't have a tightening system of their own. I am currently using them with chains and they keep them very tight. You can forget with tires spinning inside chains and cables with this product. The rubber orings are very strong. They install easier if you hook one side and then stretch the third clasp across the tire and then hook the sides. Amazon.com is the only place that I have been able to find these even though the chain manufacturer states that they are recommended right on the box that the chains and cables are shipped in. I ordered 5 sets and got free shipping so I'm good to go for a few years.

5Maybe you don't need it.Jan 06, 2011

I ordered chains that did not come with such a tightener, so I ordered the tightener separately. Then when I read the instructions with the tire chains, it suggested I not use the tightener because the chains need to move relative to the tire, so you don't wear holes in the tires where the connectors on the chain ring meet the tire. The chains should be able to move relative to the tire to get uniform wear. I have to admit that this makes some sense. I have always used tighteners before, but I have noticed wear spots on the sidewalls of the tire where the metal pieces that connect the traction chains with the circle chain meet the sidewall. I think the trick is to get the chains on fairly tight, but not too tight and NOT use a rubber tightener. At least this is what I plan to do. Now that I have the tighteners I can take them along for insurance. The actual construction of the tightener seems fine, a fat rubber band with stout metal hooks.

3Not the Correct Tightner for SZ343Jan 26, 2012
By JustAnOldGuy
This product is NOT the correct Chain Tightner for chains SZ343 as indicated on the product page..... See SCC SZ1174 for the CORRECT (spare) tighteners!
